When Ford set out to design an all-new Fusion, they had some very clear goals in mind. First, to offer something that would be fuel-efficient. Next, they knew they wanted to design a car that was as stylish as it would be reliable. And of course, they needed to create a vehicle that offered a lot of options and amenities. We knew that had accomplished all of the above when they arrived at the New York Auto Show with the 2013 Ford Fusion, a sleekly designed car with several (super-efficient) powertrain choices that spoke volumes about the future of Ford designs and engineering.

Its set to arrive in the Don Bohn Ford showroom this fall, with a choice between five engines. The first, your traditional 2.5-liter Duratec inline-four. Then there are the EcoBoost options, both the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. As for hybrids, there are two of those, too. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle, or the plug-in variant to further extend the range of the Fusion. While all of these will provide you with the kind of performance and value you'd expect from Ford, it appears the automaker has left the door open for even more options.

A representative for Ford at the auto show explained that the Fusion presented an excellent opportunity for expanding powerplant options. Does that mean that a performance-minded Fusion is headed our way? It's very possible. If it does happen, we expect it will be very similar to the Ford Taurus SHO with a 3.5-liter, 350-horsepower turbo Ecoboost V6.
