Less than six months ago, the very last Ford Ranger rolled off the line at the Twin Cities Assembly Plant in St. Paul, Minnesota. After almost 100 years of production, the plant itself shuttered its doors to coincide with the 28th, and final, year of the Ranger pickup. A film crew was there back in December to document the Ranger's last days, and HappyWrenching.com recently released the footage in a sentimental video to say farewell to the small truck.
Not only does the film provide a peek into the production of the very last Ranger, but it offers a look at the community of Ford workers affected by the plant's restructuring late last year.
You might be wondering - what happens when I'm ready for a new truck? Well, remember that the Ford F-150 - albeit a bit larger than the Ranger - still offers all of the flexibility of the now-defunct pickup.
And what about the companies that utilize trucks like the Ranger in their fleets? Well, Ford sent the very last ranger off to Orkin to use in their fleet, and they've said their current lineup is enough to keep them going for a while. Only time will tell what their next truck-of-choice will be, though we suspect the F-150 is high on the list. Paul Youngpeter, Director of Fleet for Orkin's parent company says, "Since 1983, Orkin has used the Ford Ranger as its primary fleet vehicle because it's a reliable and economical truck...We'll put [the last Ranger] into our regular service rotation before it's retired to our corporate archives or used for training."1
