What does it take to break two speed records in one day? Well, for the Hennessey Performance team, it took one very brave driver, a weekend at the Texas Mile Event in March, and a modified Ford GT. And there you have it: 257.7-mph, a new Standing Mile World Record, and a new Texas Mile record.
The previous Guinness World Record was 233 mph, set by a different GT back in 2006. This year, however, the Hennessey-tuned Ford GT was piloted by team member Sean Kennedy. It sports a twin-turbocharged 5.4-liter V8, about which John Hennessey estimates that, "2000 hp is a pretty safe bet."1 We'd say so - considering that the car hit the 204-mph mark at just half a mile.
2,000-hp easily dwarves the 550 ponies produced by stock Ford GT models, so you can be sure that not just anybody would be able to break this record. But if anybody could do it, you bet it'd be Hennessey Performance. They've been taking the world's fastest cars and making them even faster for more than 20 years, with their own line of performance parts and upgrades for a wide variety of vehicles.
But as far as this world record is concerned - team Hennessey isn't done yet. After he hit 257.7 miles in just one mile, driver Sean Kennedy said he thinks he can do even better next time. Next time? Yup, the team will be back in Texas to try it again at the end of October. And Kennedy says, "We want to go to 260!"2
